The Director of Engineering (Customer Experiences) is a strategic role. The leader provides vision, strategic direction and maturity capability to the large Engineering group responsible for the development and delivery of all of Esurance Customer Experience omni-channel online applications. The role is responsible for anticipating, enabling, and mapping business strategies to a high performing technology execution model delivered by an innovative and talented group of Engineering managers and engineers. This leader owns the technical development of all the customer-facing applications and works in a highly collaborative mode with the business and other technology stakeholders.


  • Manage the group through the company’s digital transformation towards a digital architecture and agile methodology
  • Own the company’s technology roadmap for all the digital applications and online experiences with an eye on innovation, technology competitive advantage, and business enablement
  • Manage the engineering design, specifications, analysis, development, rollout, and maintainability of the programs and projects in the roadmap and in the portfolio
  • Ensure successful execution of technical strategies, architecture guidelines and standards by collaboration with other development teams: architecture, systems engineering, services engineering, and other teams
  • Champion both functional requirements of conversion, abandonment, usability, adoption, etc. as well as non-functional requirements of high availability, scalability and reliability
  • Responsible for building, managing, scaling and maturing a high-performing multi-group Engineering team with clear metrics, industry-standard engineering practices, and by fostering a culture of continuous improvement
  • Responsible for utilization, velocity, and optimization of the Engineering resources
  • Partner and collaborate with various cross functional teams like Product Management, Program Management, Infrastructure, Operations and other business teams to produce customer value

  • Strong and detailed knowledge of digital architectures, web echo systems, modern front-end technology stacks, service oriented systems integrations, cloud computing, machine learning, continuous integration and deployment methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver large scale programs
  • Excellent leadership, project and talent management and coaching skills
  • Detail-orientation with strong organizational skills in a fast-changing environment
  • Thrive in a high-pressure challenge driven environment with passion to innovate and with fast acting decision making abilities
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interface with all functions at all levels of the organization.


Experience / Education:

  • 10 years or more of software engineering experience
  • At least 5 years of experience in web site development and online consumer reaching applications
  • At least 5 or years of management experience and prior leadership experience managing multiple development teams
  • Experience with open source technology adoption
  • Experience with both traditional and Agile development
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Master’s preferred
