Summary

The Desktop Engineering team is responsible for the standardization and management of the desktop environment in various areas. These duties include maintaining consistent and well documented desktop images, engineering solutions for the Site Support team, and leveraging technology to efficiently deploy new products and upgrades. As a member of the Desktop Engineering team, you will support various environments such as virtual machines, encryption, and anti-virus. The Desktop Engineering team is also responsible for compliance with security updates and patch management across a variety of devices.

Responsibilities

  • Must be skilled in data gathering, in order to identify specific areas for improvement. Analytical review of data, with ability to define and acquire applicable tools for automating support of the desktop environment, across numerous areas such as Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.
  • Identify specific problems, determine product requirements, and build solutions to make needed improvements.
  • Expert programming knowledge in one or more of the following languages; C++, PERL, Python, PowerShell.
  • Understanding of Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and Systems Design. Ability to work effectively within these models to achieve comprehensive and productive results.
  • Assist with rolling-out approved solutions that will allow end users to work more effectively and efficiently.
  • Provide support for projects, roll-outs, and any testing needed. Coordinate efforts with IT Desktop Support to ensure solutions are fully tested and full site/company roll-out is completed.
  • Create, test and develop workstation images. Test, evaluate, and package software and applications for workstation distribution. Automate software application deployments.
  • Responsible for successful deployment and upgrades of workstations. This includes security patches, client software, software upgrades, and new software deployments. Coordinate remediation with local IT Desktop Support as needed.
  • Serve as an escalation point for the IT Service Desk and IT Desktop Support teams. Provide additional coverage as needed to ensure support teams are meeting metrics.
  • Research and support enterprise desktop solutions using industry standard tools, for example Microsoft SCCM or other applicable products.
  • Must be expert in one or more tools such as SCCM, WSUS, WDS/Imaging, Symantec anti-virus, Vontu, Credant, Enterprise Vault, etc. Roll-out approved solutions that will allow end users to work more effectively and efficiently.
  • Must be expert in coding with a deep understanding of QA process; testing, implementation, etc.
  • Coordinate efforts with other IT teams, including Enterprise Applications and Network Infrastructure, to ensure we have a consistent approach and plan for support across the organization. Work with other engineers to test and deploy new software and solutions.
  • Work with the Server and Networking teams and assist with projects, roll-outs, and testing as needed. Coordinate efforts with local IT Desktop Support to ensure solutions are fully tested and full site/company roll-out is completed.

Qualifications

  • Thorough understanding of Active Directory; including replication, GPO, and DNS.
  • Competent understanding of TCP/IP networking for LAN and WAN.
  • Expert in one of the following:
    Microsoft SCCM, WDS/Imaging, SAV, Credant, Vontu, App-V.
  • Proficient knowledge of registry, permissions, and drivers and software required.
  • Expert knowledge of scripting with SQL and Schema experience.
  • General understanding of and ability to operate within the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Able to work effectively under deadlines in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to details.
  • Strong analytical, trouble-shooting and problem solving skills.

    Experience / Education:

  • 5 years? experience working directly in desktop engineering, with scripting and automation using industry standard tools.
  • Or, Bachelor's degree in Computer Systems, or related field, with minimum of 3-5 years? experience in desktop engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years working with multiple operating systems; Windows desktop and server, Mac, Linux, etc.
  • The following experience/certifications are not required, but are a plus:
    MCSE, SDLC, MS Servers, Cisco, Linux, SQL.
