    Responsibilities

    The Regulatory Compliance Counsel provides legal and regulatory advice to ensure all products sold by Esurance are in compliance with state laws. This job partners with the Product and Underwriting teams having a critical role in the development, drafting and implementation of new Esurance products and services as the company expands product offerings. The Regulatory Compliance Counsel is also a partner to a variety of internal business units including billing, sales, marketing, and our customer service centers in support of the company's regulatory compliance efforts.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for drafting all company personal lines policies and forms and assisting in implementation of those products in support of company product development initiatives.
    • Responsible for supporting the development and implementation of new products in compliance with state law.
    • Responsible for providing legal advice to product management related to rate and rule filings.
    • Responsible for conducting legal research for internal business customers and providing concise, understandable, accurate, and actionable legal advice to non-attorneys.
    • Significant interactions and negotiations with state regulatory agencies including departments of insurance.
    • Responsible for tracking impactful state statutory/regulatory laws and insurance department communications, and communicating these changes to business partners in a concise manner, assessing any impacts to the company, and supporting necessary implementation projects.
    • Responsible for improving compliance through the development of consistent policies, procedures, best practices and guidelines for all company departments.
    • Responsible for conducting, investigating, and managing investigations of potential compliance legal issues and ensuring investigations are handled promptly, accurately and resolved consistently.
    • Responsible for drafting responses on complex matters to questions from state insurance regulators in connection with consumer complaints, form filings, investigations, market conduct exams and informal inquiries.
    • Actively participate in the project management, coordination and implementation of company-wide initiatives
    • Review and provide legal and business advice with regard to review business review documents. (BRDs.)
    • Perform other duties and special projects for the compliance department on an as-needed basis.

    Qualifications

    • Strong legal skills across a broad range of areas including insurance regulatory compliance and familiar with applicable legal concepts, practices and procedures.
    • Working knowledge of the Property and Casualty insurance industry. Drafting or underwriting experience is a plus.
    • Clear understanding of and adherence to ethical principles, company values, code of conduct and policies.
    • Clear understanding of business operations, and corporate governance/compliance issues.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead as well as collaborate and function well in a team environment.
    • Self-motivated and efficient, with good business judgment and analytic skills. Forward-thinking and creative, with the confidence to present and advocate for the implementation of ideas.
    • Experienced with and capable of leading and directing the work of others.
    • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to do legal research and provide legal advice under severe time constraints in a fast moving environment.

     

    Experience / Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in business, political science, a related field or equivalent education required.
    • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree and member in good standing of a state bar.
    • Five or more years of experience as an attorney. Experience with insurance regulatory compliance preferred.

    Four or more years of experience with personal lines insurance litigation and policies and forms.
